Sweetheart, we’re spending far too much time together: My love-hate relationship with Mountain Dew

I spent today with a huge headache.  Strange thing is… I never get headaches (I mean ever). 

I began to analyze my day and nothing seemed off the beaten path, except that I ran out of Mountain Dew.  The local gas station went up on all their Pepsi products $1 buck, so I decide to get the special 2 for $6 deal on Coke.   The headache began at 9:30am and by lunchtime, I was ready for something… so I had a Coke with my lunch.  Nothing.

My love relationship with Mrs. Dew happened long ago.  I can’t even remember how long it has been.  Once I met her, I was hooked.  But it’s funny how my dependency on her created this alien, temporal pain.  Come to think of it… all of my headaches may have been as a result of her disciplinary lashings.  This recent “lashing” has given me no recourse but to question our future relationship.  It’s true that I love her… (sigh)… but I think it’s time to redefine our association.  She’s not to be “thrown out in the cold.”  (mmm…she’s good cold).  But I’m going to label my precious 12 oz. can of liquid delight as “desert only” and no longer use her as an integral part of my dining experience. 

Anyone else out there battle this dependency?  Are there any doctors or nutritionists out there that can put their finger on what Miss Dew has that no other has?  She’s a drug.  Why is it so easy for others to fall out of love, and not me?   The lines are open….

  1. Hahaha, even though you are being totally serious, i actually started laughing reading this! 🙂 The way you wrote it is funny lol

    I’m definitely not a doctor… haha but my friend had a problem with this too once(except with pepsi)- so pretty much he just kept cutting down the amount he had until it was none at all except maybe once or twice a week- but it took a longgggg time!(like a year)

    You have to do it in increments- like 3 to 2 and a half, 2 and a half to just 2, etc.

    You have to know that soda, in general, is something one should enjoy only as an occasional treat. Mountain Dew has 55 mg caffeine per serving compared to regular cola at 34 mg – so you are likely suffering from a caffeine-withdrawl symptom. You know that too much caffeine wreaks havoc on one’s nervous system and gastrointestinal system.

    Try backing off a little at a time… drink a TON of water. Yeah – I know. Water. How boring. I can not even begin to tell you what a difference it will make in the way you feel – but you will need to give it a little time… Try it – a little bit at a time. Ideally you may want to consider getting to one or two sodas a week and lots and lots of water.

  3. hehehe… I guess soda is bad in any light,eh? And if Mountain Dew is like drinking 2 Cokes… I suppose it would be best for me to cut back. (sigh) I’m tryin guys and gals. I’m tryin.

    I drink a canny bit of coffee so every now and then I’ll go a few days without just to check I’m not developing some kind of dependency.

    You can take some Excedrin Migraine to help “wean” from the habit. It has a bit of caffeine in it and also helps with the headaches!

  8. My vice (well, one of them) is Pepsi. It was quite difficult to switch to diet cold-turkey, so, like the previous writer, I had to do it in increments. The headaches were terrible! Now the canned-sugar fiends have come out with Diet Pepsi Max. It has a little ginseng in it, and doesn’t taste like a diet drink at all. Diet Code Red Mt. Dew is good, too. Good luck!

  9. I used to be farm manager for an organic farm and was getting up very early and working hard all day. I was sucking down 40oz of coffee by noon and thought gee, maybe I oughta chill a little. Switched initially to chai and now I drink mainly tea. Tea having lots of health benefits and much less caffeine. Good quality whole leaf chinese teas are great because not only are they tasty, they can also be resteeped at least two or three times. So you get three cups of tea for the caffeine of one. Also, as I am studying chinese medicine now, the word on coffee is bad for the kidney “system” (adrenals get overworked). I actually slipped a disc last year and while it may have had something to do with tons of heavy lifting,(I had switched over to running the distribution at the farm’s warehouse)taxing the kidney system is associated with weakening your lower back. Suffice it to say Taijiquan helped greatly in my recovery! Now my main vice is sloth, ala your other post!
